The new year is the perfect time to start afresh and make positive changes in our lives. The best way to kickstart a healthy lifestyle is to prioritize your oral health and commit to protecting your smile. Here are five New Year’s resolutions that can help you achieve your smile goals in 2023.

Brush Twice a Day

Brushing your teeth twice a day is essential for maintaining a healthy smile. It helps remove plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that builds up on your teeth, which can cause cavities and other serious dental issues. Brushing your teeth twice a day also removes food particles and debris stuck between teeth and along the gum line, which can also result in gum disease if not cleaned regularly.

To brush your teeth properly, use a soft-bristled toothbrush and toothpaste with fluoride. Place the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle near the gum line and use gentle, circular motions to brush the outer surfaces of your teeth. Then, brush the inner surfaces of your teeth in the same manner. Finally, clean your tongue to remove bacteria and freshen your breath. Be sure to brush for at least two minutes and reach all areas of your mouth. It is also important to replace your toothbrush every three to four months or sooner if the bristles become frayed.

Cut Down on Sugar

Cutting down on sugary and sweet food and drinks can have a positive impact on your dental and overall health. Sugars found in food can interact with the bacteria naturally found in the mouth, leading to acid production, which can damage tooth enamel. This can lead to tooth decay, cavities, and other oral health problems.

Be mindful of what foods and beverages you consume. Try to limit or avoid sugary snacks, candy, and sweets. Drink more water instead of sugary drinks, such as soda, energy drinks, and juice. When consuming foods and beverages with added sugars, brush your teeth or rinse your mouth with water after eating.

Floss Once a Day

Flossing once a day is an important part of a healthy dental hygiene routine. Not only does flossing remove food particles and plaque trapped between teeth, but it also helps get rid of bacteria that can lead to tooth decay and gum disease.

To floss properly, start by winding about 18 inches of floss around your index and middle fingers. Gently guide the floss between your teeth using a back-and-forth motion. Curve the floss around the base of each tooth and gently slide it up and down the tooth’s surface. Make sure to get under the gum line to remove any plaque or food particles that may be stuck there. As you floss, move from one tooth to the next, using a fresh section of floss for each tooth. When you’re finished, give your teeth a final rinse with water or mouthwash.

Quit Tobacco Products

Quitting tobacco products can make a huge difference to not just your dental health but also your overall health and well-being. Tobacco products, including cigarettes, cigars, and smokeless tobacco, can lead to a variety of oral health problems, such as gum disease, tooth decay, and even oral cancer. Even if you don’t use tobacco products, secondhand smoke can also be damaging to your oral health. The good news is that when you quit, your oral health can improve.
